  • Conservation and Restoration of Preah Pithu Temple Group and the Terrace of the Elephants, Cambodia (the second project; 2019 - 2023)

    Project Overview

    The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation and the Korea International Cooperation Agency performed the first project for conservation and restoration of Preah Pithu Temple Group in Angkor Complex from September 2015 to November 2018. Based on the masterplan for the Temple Group, which is from the results of the project, works of conservation and restoration are being performed on Chorm Temple (Temple U) and Terrace of the Elephants. This second project, with the Authority for the Protection and management of Ankor and the Region of Siem Reap, will be conducted from October 2019 to November 2023.

    Detailed Survey

    The Foundation conducted 3D scanning to identify the exact shape of Terrace of the Elephants with a total length of about 350 m. Based on the results, blueprint was prepared to set a reference point for future conservation and restoration work.

    Diagnosis of Stone Condition

    The stones of the Terrace of the Elephants were investigated to identify how much they were damaged. The physical properties of the stone were determined by using ultrasonic waves and whole-rock magnetic susceptibility rate, and the damaged stones were investigated in terms of physical, chemical, and environmental factors.

    Excavation Investigation

    An excavation investigation was performed to establish the characteristics of Chorm Temple. In order to determine its correlation with Kor Sork Temple nearby, the first investigation was performed on the area between the two temples.

    Dismantlement Investigation

    The Foundation is planning to perform a dismantlement targeting structurally unstable parts of the Terrace of the Elephants, in order to identify its internal structure. The Foundation will establish a plan of restoration, which will be safely performed after the stones are processed for preservation.
