Korea Cultural House (KOUS)

Welcome to Korea Cultural House (KOUS). KOUS is a cultural space in which Korea’s magnificent traditional culture is explained and introduced in modern times, and a facility in which Koreans and foreigners can comprehensively experience and enjoy Korean traditional culture.

Korea Cultural House (KOUS) was newly built in order to introduce overseas visitors and foreigners in Korea to Korean traditional culture, and systematically meet Korean’s high interest in and desire to learn about Korean culture, and is a small building of 600 pyeong that has one floor underground and four above ground. The construction of the building began in 2001, was completed in March, 2003, and was formally open on April 1.
At present, a regular performance in which traditional instrumental music, vocal music and dance showing Korean spirit are staged, and the traditional cultural experience program for foreigners and teenagers is operated.
『KOUS』 provides a new cultural trend in the traditional culture of the 21st century, such that KOUS may serve as a traditional cultural education experience space in which Korean can actively participate in their daily life, and the Korean traditional culture can be correctly understood by foreigners to contribute to the cultural image of the country.

Korean traditional music and dance that can be appreciated in the exclusive traditional art theater including 240 seats are harmonized with the performing center decorated with Dancheong (various colors) to offer superiority of Korean traditional art and impression to domestic and foreign visitors.

Korean Traditional Craft Architecture School

  • Lessons in which a traditional craft architecture technique is applied and a utilization capability is improved through practical education are provided to people of various ages including housewives and working people, so that they can learn and enjoy the lessons.
    • Practical crafts lesson (Tuition Fees: 7 hundred thousand won - 1 million 740 thousand won)
  • Traditional embroidery, Chimseon (sewing), Bojagi (a traditional Korean wrapping cloth), Maedeup (knot-tying), Doja (ceramic ware), Ipsa (Inlaying), tray-table with lacquer, Somok (furniture making), Daemok (traditional wooden architecture), Jangseok (hardware fixed on the wooden furniture or some other structures to make jointing or to open and close like a lock), Changho (windows and doors), Gakja (calligraphic engraving), and Dancheong (ornamental painting). A one-year course, in which the lessons are given three times a week.
    • Lecturers : Traditional craftsmen such as possessors of Important Intangible Cultural Assets, teaching assistants for training, and initiators.

Opportunities to acquire professional knowledge necessary for repairing and restoring the cultural properties are provided to those who are engaged in related fields such as construction, design and Dancheong (ornamental painting).

  • Lessons (Tuition Fees: 7 hundred thousand won)
    • Korean History, Korean Architecture History, Cultural Property Protection Law, Repairing and Main tenance (stone/wooden construction), Wooden Framework, Repair of Cultural Properties, Theory and Practical Skill of Dancheong, Introduction to Architecture and Construction, and on-the job lectures.
    • Every Saturday from March to June
  • Lecturers: Cultural property members and professionals in each field (professors and scholars)

Cultural property vocational training for teachers

An in-depth course of the cultural properties, through which training incumbent teachers on the cultural properties is enhanced, is given to provide an opportunity to learn the traditional culture.

  • Period: During the summer vacation
  • Target: Incumbent elementary school, middle school and high school teachers in the country

Experience of Traditional Culture

The traditional culture experience program (apply at any time), in which Korean traditional culture is explained and experienced, is provided to the Koreans, foreigners, teenagers, and companies.

  • Qualification for participation: 20 or more Koreans or foreigners
  • Items: Crafts experience (painting Dancheong, making ornamental knots, and jewel cases formed of Korean paper) Art Experience (Samul nori (Korean traditional percussion quartet), Talchum (mask dance), and Taekgyeon (traditional martial art)
  • Procedures of Application: Confirmation of schedule and reception -> payment of fees -> proceeding with the experience event
  • Fees: 10,000 won-20,000 won
