Training Center for Important Intangible Cultural Properties

The Training Center for Important Intangible Cultural Properties was founded by the Cultural heritage Administration of Korea in 1997 for the purpose of preserving the important intangible cultural properties, and is managed by the Foundation for the Preservation of ultural Properties, Korea. It is a space in which transmission activities of the possessors and groups of the important intangible cultural properties are performed, and beautiful traditional culture including various traditional performances, exhibitions and experiences can be experienced and enjoyed.

Training Center for Important Cultural Properties is a building built for the purpose of preservation and transmission of the traditional culture, and is occupied by possessors of the important intangible cultural properties designated by the country to support the transmission education and training of to the general public. Groups in 8 art items occupy the center, and the transmission education to hand down the art to posterity, and the lessons to the general public are performed by the possessors at any time.
Further, the possessors participate in the regularly staged performances and invitation performances held in the nation and overseas. 12 studios of the craftwork item occupy the center and the possessor of the important intangible cultural property describes a process of making craftwork and shows the completed work to the general public, and transmission education of crafts is performed. Main facilities include the folk theater called “Pungryu” including 147 seats, “the center of the traditional craftwork,” in which a regular exhibition center and the planning exhibition office are situated, on the second to third floors, the regular exhibition corner of the traditional crafts, in which the possessors of the important intangible cultural properties and craftsmen sell their works, the seminar room, the art practice room, and the craft education practice room.

Folk Theater called “Pungryu”

This is a performing art hall in a semicircle shape, and the seats are close the stage (147 seats), so that the players and audience can harmonize with each other.

  • Regular Performance “Pungryu Hanmadang”
    • This is a regular performance introducing the important intangible cultural property items on Fridays, and various performances including Pansori (a type of traditional Korean music), Gut (an exorcism), Talchum (a mask dance), folk songs and Gayageum (Korean instrument with 12 strings) are staged.
  • Daegwan Performance
    • A stage, on which works of art contributing to the transmission and development of the traditional culture are introduced to the general public, and many traditional culture artists can play, is offered.

Traditional creftwork Exhibit Hall

This is a unique gallery, in which works of the possessors of the important intangible properties are appreciated, and taste of the traditional culture is fully enjoyed, so that it is loved by domestic and overseas guests.

  • Regular Exhibit Hall
    • In the regular exhibit hall, the works of possessors of the important intangible cultural properties are displayed in a space in which a public demonstration of craftworks and experience of the works are prepared.
  • Planning Exhibition Hall
    • Every year, the possessors of craftwork and traditional craftsmen inheriting the tradition are provided with the place for exhibiting their works through lending the Hall.

The Cultural Heritage Information Material Room

The Cultural Heritage Information Material Room located in the basement (221.5㎡) was constructed in order to collect, arrange and preserve cultural heritage related materials to thereby transmit and propagate Korean traditional culture. The room possesses professional books of the cultural heritage, general lists of remains and exhibitions, audio and video materials, and periodicals, and includes information search computers and video and audio equipment to facilitate visitors’ use of them.

Status of Occupying Groups

Status of Occupying Groups In Training Center for Important Cultural Properties, 12 studios of craftsmen of the important intangible cultural properties, and 8 groups in the art item of the important intangible cultural properties. 12 studios describe the process of making a craftwork and show the completed craftworks to the general public. A transmission education of the crafts is performed, and in the art group, a transmission education is performed on the possessors to transmit the crafts technique to the posterity. Training of the general public is offered throughout the year, and a regular announcement performance and invitation performances are staged in the nation and overseas.
